Chequers Cars moves from Lightwater to Chobham – UPDATED

The Chequers Cars site is a feature in Lightwater. Us Lightwaterans have seen the business grow over the years, taking over more of the site from Deepcut Garage, the previous whole site occupiers. While using the car wash on the site I learned that they were considering moving as they don’t own the site they trade from.

I’ve no knowledge of the plans for the site when Chequers have left, though it’s no stretch of imagination to see the site sold for housing. I’m sorry to see them leave Lightwater, and wish Chequers business good fortune, and am pleased that they’ve not left the Borough.

Here’s a photo, taken this morning (Sunday), of the site old Chequers site,

Following new rules for my daily walk

The rules for the coronavirus containment say I can now drive to a place where I can take excercise.

My exercise routine is generally to take a walk in the countryside, where I can enjoy nature and so on. That countryside excercise has mostly been walks over our local heathland. Now that I can go further afield, I drove to Chobham to walk in its 58 acres of Water Meadows SANG. I parked in the car park – two hours free.

Don’t laugh, I know going to Chobham from Lightwater isn’t what you might call a long way away. It did mean, though, that I walked in the Water Meadows for the first time. Surprising you might think, never having been to the Water Meadows before. I do have the Brentmoor Heath, Folly Bog and Hangmoor Hill on my doorstep.

Anyway, let’s get to my Water Meadows experience. It’s far more extensive than I’d imagined. The sign says the meadows are 23.5 hectacres – can’t say that conjures up a size in my mind, but 58 acres, now you’re talking.. Good flat walking, the Mill Bourne stream with a number of bridges to enjoy, nice wide open meadows. All round a pleasant place to excercise. Here are a few photos,

Chobham village pays respect at the funeral of Geoffrey Vero

Last Friday St Lawrence Church in Chobham held the funeral of Geoffrey Vero, a scion of Chobham life. The congregation filled the church, and overflowed into the adjoining church hall. I estimated many hundreds of people were there to pay their respects to the life of Geoffrey. That number shows the regard in which Geoffrey was held in Chobham and more widely.

In many local organisations, sporting, and political, Geoffrey was a stalwart on many committees. Though my knowledge of him was limited, I wanted to attend the funeral, as did so many others, to acknowledge the life of a gentleman who freely offered wise counsel, and encouragement.

Visiting Westways Farm gardens in Chobham for NGS

Yesterday, being such a warm and sunny day, was a perfect day for a National Garden Scheme garden visit.

Which garden to choose, that was the question. There were so many open – eight in Hampshire and six in Surrey. Should it be near or far? Hampshire or Surrey? We plumped for Surrey, and for local over far.

Result, we visited Westways Farm, Gracious Pond Road, Chobham. Described as a,

6 acre garden surrounded by woodlands planted in 1930s with mature and some rare rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias, underplanted with bluebells, lilies and dogwood; extensive lawns and sunken pond garden.

The outstanding feature of Westways Farm are the collection of mature rhododendrons and azaleas set in a woodland setting. The colours of the azaleas were enchanting, plus the tea and cake were what I always look orward too.  Here are my photos of our visit, focus naturally on rhodos and azaleas.
