Good to see Michael fighting hard

This is an amazing week for politics in the UK. It doesn’t herald a change in our politics, it’s happening before our eyes, by the day, and by the hour.

Careers are being trashed, even as I write.  The resolve of MP’s caught in the headlights of exposure is being tested. Now is the time for those with the heart and ambition to fight to save themselves.

It is, however, a matter of scale. This maybe be unfair, unjust, cruel, or whatever. If you’re not squeaky clean, then there’s a battle to be fought.

Contrast John Maples and Andrew Mackay’s appearances on Sky News. Maples is caught up in the scandal, but spoke with the confidence of someone with some remaining integrity. Mackay’s response showed he didn’t ‘get it’, and failed the integrity test. Best thing for him to do is stand down, as should his wife Julie Kirkbride [for whom I’ve an enormous soft spot].

ConHomeAnyway, about our MP, Michael Gove. He remains in the firing line, as this question in Conservative Home’s survey shows.

Michael has circulated a statement in his defence, and is holding a Public Meeting at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Park Road, Camberley next Monday 18th May at 7.30 p.m.

Interestingly, David Cameron is displaying true leadership strength and determination. Funny, how his perceived disadvantages of education and wealth is now proving to be the qualities we need for national leadership. Cometh the hour, cometh the man was never truer.

  1. Tim,

It was a shock to see Michael’s name headlined earlier this week but since then I have spent hours trawling the Internet for the facts. Having done so, I am very relieved and completely satisfied that he has acted entirely properly. In fact he has gone beyond the call of duty in taking the steps that he has taken since this news broke.

What’s clear to me is that our ‘democratic’ system is rotten to the core but despite this our MP has already emerged with his personal integrity intact.

  2. Robin, I agree with you, though Michael should have been more aware of the risks in claiming expenses for his home move. Difficult call I know, but it’s an attitude issue. The taxpayer supporting my life choices when I’m an MP.
