Lichfield Cathedral impresses

During our recent visit to relatives in Lichfield, we visited Lichfield Cathedral. With three spires and an impressive West Front having statues of Kings and Saints.

The Cathedral was badly damaged during the Civil War, while being defended by the Royalists and eventually overwhelmed by Cromwell’s Roundheads, and then retaken by Royalist forces. The civil war saw the roof being demolished, along with statues and the central spire. Not until the 19th century were the statues of kings, queens and saints on the West Front repaired, and much else as well. We have eminent Victorian architects and builders to thank for the repairs.

There’s much to admire in the Cathedral, for me the Minton encaustic tiles are notable, as was the seat of the bishop with it’s ornate carving and comfy-looking cushion. I took some photos of the Cathedral exterior and interior, click on the images to expand.
