Surrey County Council begins part-night time street lighting in Surrey Heath in December 2016

I’m alerted, by readers, to Surrey County Council’s plans to introduce part-night time street lighting.

street-light-in-lightwater-roadI haven’t been aware of this, or more importantly that there’d been a consultation on the subject. I guess all our away days and holidays we’ve enjoyed this summer have come at the expense of being out of touch with some local issues.

I fall into the category of being a diligent resident who reports street light issues, such as incorrect timing. Will I now become one who suggests places where street lights need to remain on throughout the night. I guess I need to study the report to Surrey County Council cabinet on the topic – shown below. [Photo: one of my concerns is street lights in Lightwater Road – not the cyclist. Short of photos of street lights which is why I chose this photo]. Ah, well, at least it’s a new interest for me.

The timetable for the introduction of the part-night street lighting has Surrey Heath, along with Guildford and Waverley, in the first phase. Looking HERE at the street/roads in Surrey Heath, you’ll see there are very few exceptions.

  1. Hi Tim We’ve never met but I’ve been following your blog for ages. Part-time night lighting – I am in the process of writing to John Furey about this asking how the views of just 842 Surrey residents can be deemed representative of the rest of [say]900,000 residents. Also why was this whole ‘survey’ virtually hidden away from the public eye where only those who stumbled across it knew what was in the wind. I quote      “A public consultation was published via the Council’s website     (www.surreysays.co.uk) from 5 August 2016 to 2 September 2016. This     was promoted through a variety of routes including emailing links via     Residents’ Panels and posters in the Council’s Libraries.” Do you regularly check the SCC website for notifications of public consultations, going to a SCC library to check on the contents of the notice boards or are you a member of a Residents’ Panel? Come to think of it what exactly is a “Residents’ Panel”? I’ve just checked and we haven’t got one in Lightwater or in Surrey Heath. Being the ultimate cynic [!] I fully expect to get a super-duper non-committal response that doesn’t answer the questions! Regards David Walton9 Derwent RoadLightwater

  2. I wonder if the lights in residential roads will have a very slow ramp-up otherwise a load of folks will have a sudden wake-up at the 5am switch-on.

Will this stupid “Carbon Tax” be one of the rules from Brussels that will be killed by Brexit ?
Who had the idea that this little country would save the world when China, India etc are still spewing masses into the atmosphere.

  3. No lights equals an invitation to thieves – I hope the police will monitor “house break ins” and other crime and report to the council…
