Surrey Heath Borough Council announce that,
Karen Whelan, Chief Executive, Surrey Heath Borough Council said: “We are delighted to announce today, 3 April 2019, that Kier Property, the development arm of Kier Group, have been selected by the Council as the preferred developer to work on a mixed- use scheme in the Camberley London Road Development site.
The proposed scheme will completely transform a run-down area of the town centre and create a thriving new town square surrounded by a large mixed-use development, including retail, residential, parking and new outside space. This announcement marks the end of the procurement process and work will now begin on surveying the site and submitting the planning application.”
Kier Property proposed a scheme that best met the Council’s vision and objectives creating the most comprehensive masterplan. It also proposed the largest mix of uses including leisure provision.
Andrew Storey, managing director for Kier Property Regeneration, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Surrey Heath Borough Council to develop this important site in Camberley. We believe our proposals will provide vibrance to the town given the mixed-use nature of them and we look forward to working alongside Karen Whelan and her team over the next few years to deliver our vision utilising all the skills of Kier Group.”
Redeveloping the London Road Site to provide an attractive gateway to Camberley as well as enhancing the town centre offer has been a key priority for Surrey Heath Borough Council (SHBC) for a number of years. The 5.5-acre site offers the opportunity for a mixed-use redevelopment and a complete transformation of this part of the town, creating a new community for people to live, work and enjoy leisure activities.
The council’s vision for the development of the London Road site is comprehensive and the site must;
- Make a significant positive contribution to Camberley town centre in both economic and place-making terms
- Supports SHBC’s aim of promoting Camberley as a destination of choice to live, work and shop and provides a positive legacy in its own right
- Provides a positive arrival experience for the town centre when viewed from the London Road; and
- Allows for a mix of uses which reflects the corresponding economic demand in a way that enhances and reinforces the town centre offer, while ensuring that the development is commercially viable.
Four developers were shortlisted, Countryside, Kier Property, Hub Group and Berkeley Group and all submitted comprehensive and excellent final tenders. All of these four parties have demonstrated a track record in delivering complex regeneration projects. Their responses and proposals were stringently reviewed and evaluated against the Council’s objectives and vision for the site with clarification questions posed to each bidder.
We look forward to sharing the plans for the site once they become available.
