Donkey Town in West End village is in ‘The UK’s Oddest Place Names’

Surrey Heath has a place [Donkey Town in West End village] that appears in a map of The UK’s Oddest Place Names. See HERE for some info on the name. The descriptive line beneath the map says,

“The UK is blessed with some very odd place names. From Horrid Hill to Donkey Town, check out FamilyBreakFinder’s map of the funny and weirdest towns and places in the UK.”

  1. I heard that the name was effectively coined when an early OS Map was being surveyed – the Surveyor asked a local what this area to the west of the WE Village centre (then located near the current ‘Hare & Hounds’ – opposite the original Cricket Green) was known as …

the chap looked around at the thatched cottages on the scrubby Heathland, with sheep, goats & donkeys grazing on the sparse vegetation as urchins gathered firewood & played with dogs and suchlike …..

… taking his pipe from his mouth he opined that it had no actual name – being much of a place “for Donkies & suchlike …”
