Surrey Heath Sports Awards 2016 winners

Surrey Heath Borough Council released this report yesterday,

The Surrey Heath Sports Awards celebrated the best in local sporting achievement with a special ceremony at Camberley Theatre on Monday.

Organised by Surrey Heath Borough Council, the awards honour people from across the borough who have excelled in their sport, exceeded personal targets or made a meaningful impact on the local community.

The awards were attended by around 350 members of the local sporting community and selected VIPs including the Mayor of Surrey Heath Cllr John Winterton, and Team GB Olympians Phil Burgess (rugby sevens) and Ashley McKenzie (judo).

The evening is one of the most anticipated events in the borough calendar as a chance to celebrate the achievements of local athletes, clubs, coaches and volunteers.

Nominations from the public received over the summer were whittled down to a shortlist of just three finalists per category before winners were selected by the Surrey Heath Sports Council.

Award Winners:
Coach of the Year – Pedro Lemos
Club of the Year – Swifts Juniors
Disability Sports Award – Penny Froude
Outstanding Service – Christine Thompson
Sports Personality – Phil Burgess
Surrey Youth Games ‘Performance of the Games’ – Ellen D’Arcy
Surrey Youth Games ‘Coach of the Games’ – Chris Pratt
Sports Team of the Year – Camberley Rugby Club Men’s First XV
Young Sports Personality – Zayna Gallacher
Young Sports Team – Camberley Town U13 Boys
Young Volunteer – Phoenix Govey-Gray

Portfolio Holder for Business Cllr Craig Fennell, said, “This has been another fantastic year for sport in the borough with Olympic and Paralympic medals for athletes with local connections, and excellent performances and participation levels from Surrey Heath clubs at all levels. These awards are a great opportunity to celebrate this, and encourage future success.”
