Watching happy wedding celebrations in Portugal

In our short break to northern Portugal we visited the delightful town of Amarante, situated astride the River Tâmega. In the town’s centre is an imposing bridge over the river adjacent to the São Gonçalo Church, which is a Portugese national monument.

After admiring the church architecture and a refreshing coffee we noticed a a gathering outside the church. Ladies in their finest dresses signalled a a wedding. We waited for the happy couple to emerge and to be greeted by guests with flower petals and rice, which were liberally thrown over the happy couple. Here’s a photo montage of the celebrations,
