This year’s Queen’s Christmas Day Broadcast was one of Her Majesty’s best.
For those of us who have, occasionally, to speak in public, it’s often a struggle to find the words to express what you feel. Especially so, when it’s to thank the work of volunteers. The Queen expressed it perfectly, in a way that I wished I’d been able to do. Here’s the paragraph in which the Queen expresses thanks for the “army of volunteers”.
“We were reminded, too, that the success of these great festivals depended to an enormous degree upon the dedication and effort of an army of volunteers. Those public-spirited people came forward in the great tradition of all those who devote themselves to keeping others safe, supported and comforted.”
It’s the phrase “who devote themselves to keeping others safe, supported and comforted” that I think is spot on.
