In my experience management is perpetual vigilance. Sir Terry Leahy, Tesco chief executive, has amplified this while being interviewed in The Daily Telegraph,
“The odd thing about the chief executive’s job is that it is frustrating. It is not a league championship that you can win and then you have won it. It is a never-ending contest.
“You can’t look back and say here are my six league championships. You might be just a week away from a crisis or a problem. It is a rather unsettling feeling actually. It is a long haul,”
