Alistair Cooke’s letters soon online lifts my depression

I imagine I’m not the only person to profoundly shocked and depressed by the revelations about Jimmy Saville, and much other murky goings on in our society. The BBC has much to answer for in this matter, for it was them that provided the basis of his fame that he used shamelessly.

My spirits have been lifted by the news that the archive of Alistair Cooke’s Letter from America will be accessible online from November 1st this year. As a contrast to their shame, the BBC deserves praise for making his letters available online.

Alistair Cooke’s  urbane, gentle, and instructive weekly BBC radio broadcasts were a highlight of my listening week for many, many years. I’ll be among the first to delve into this rich resource of elegantly written, and often uplifting stories of American life.
