A charity lunch with Bob Champion

Earlier this year, at a mayoral charity ball, I won a charity auction for lunch for two with Bob Champion MBE at Southwell Racecourse near Nottingham. Won is perhaps not quite the correct word. I outbid the other bidders.

Well, Thursday last week was the day of the lunch. We were lucky that it was a lovely sunny autumnal day. Lunch, in the marquee, was preceded with Bob Champion [winner of the 1981 Grand National on Aldaniti after recovering from cancer] recalling his fascinating story as a jump jockey and survivor of a battle with cancer.

Prior to the first race at 2.30pm there was a competition for the honour of presenting the prize to the wining owner. On our table were two serious punters, who were big winners on the day, which, sadly, we weren’t. It was a great day out. Horse racing is one of those sports where you can get close to the jockeys, horses, owners, and of course, the action. I’ve put together a few photo’s of the event.
