I’ve received early notification of Surrey County Council Highways’ planned road safety improvements to Red Road in Lightwater.
In brief the Highways report is,
- B311, Red Road – 27 collisions in three years.
- Observed casualty pattern: speeds too fast for road and loss of control on bends.
- Identified scheme: reduction of speed limit to 50 mph, new vehicle activated sign and chevron signing.
- Estimated cost : £31,800
I hope to learn more about this work, and when it might be done at the upcoming Surrey Heath Local Committee Meeting on 18th October at the Ian Goodchild Centre in Camberley.
It’s got to be a worthwhile expenditure to reduce accidents on Red Road, especially in the S bends. Last week I visited the area around the bends, reminding myself of the evidence of past accidents, and took the photo of what remains in the ditch from one of the many accidents.

Would traffic lights installed at Lightwater and Macdonald Road’s respectively – thus making turning into Red Road safer and inevitably reduce speeds not be more sensible? Speed limits and activated signs will continue to be ignored. 27 Collisions in three years speaks for itself!!
