Enlightened on some things, and not others

I’d hoped that last night’s, well attended, External Partnerships Select Committee of Surrey Heath Borough Council would be revealing and interesting, On the agenda were presentations from,  Surrey Police on Counter Terrorism, Camberley Citizens Advice Bureau, and Voluntary Services Surrey Heath.

I’d probably set too high expectations of what might be revealed about counter terrorism, which sadly weren’t met. My own fault for thinking that it would contain exciting snippets of information. The truth is that counter terrorism is all about eternal vigilance and it’s activities left undisclosed.

My disappointment was soon lifted with the presentation from Citizens Advice, which was informative, encouraging, and enjoyable. What they’re able to achieve with few staff but many volunteers is impressive. Camberley CAB is Surrey Heath Borough Council’s main recipient of revenue support grant.

The greater part of their work, so they said, was in debt counselling and assistance. Tara Hastings, the centre manager, said they’d helped get £400,000 of debt written off for clients, from banks and credit companies. I hope there’s scope in next year’s council budget to increase our support for their work.
