At last night’s meeting of the full council of Surrey Heath Cllr Rodney Bates moved the following motion,
“This council requests the Mayor to send our best wishes to all Surrey Heath residents and those in local clubs who are taking part in the upcoming Olympic Games”.
He was supported by Cllr Colin Dougan. Both spoke eloquently about the good work of residents of our borough, either competing in, or helping at the London Olympics.
Before the meeting I spoke with Rodney, and asked if he’d let me read out the names of the Olympians from our borough at the London Olympics. We compared the names we each had, and Rodney’s list was longer than mine, although my list had the names of Olympic torch bearers. Even so, Cllr Dougan had names that neither of us had.
I was delighted to support Cllr Bates motion to council, and thanked him for the opportunity he’d given me to say the names, so that they’d be recorded in the Council minutes forever. This is the list that the three of us had compiled [Name, Sport, Home Town].
