Last night, at a meeting of the Full Council of Surrey Heath Borough Council, members adopted the Council’s Core Strategy [To be accurate, the title of the document is Core Strategy and Development Management Policies Development Plan Document] * see note below.
Surprisingly, a council officer informed me that of the approximate 350 councils in England only 22% have formally adopted a Core Strategy. I know of a probable reason why, it takes an enormous amount of officer and member time, including numerous public consultations. It’s an acheivement of which we can be proud.
I’m imaging that you are wondering what is a Core Strategy. In essence it defines the long-term planning framework for the Borough up to 2028 [fifteen full years from the date of adoption of the Core Strategy]. I found this easy to understand definition on another Council’s website,
“A Core Strategy sets out the vision for the Borough to the year 2028 and how we are going to get there. It provides the objectives and strategy for the future development in the Borough and identifies the major areas where growth and change will take place. All future planning policies and documents produced within the Local Development Framework will be in accordance with the Core Strategy and will help deliver its vision and principles.”
* I’ll provide an update when I find the link to the adopted Core Strategy document.
