Work to start on canal towpath repair

Last month’s lovely sunny weather tempted me into an exploratory walk around Deepcut. During this walk I saw the canal repairs and the closed towpath by Deepcut Bridge.

In the Autumn 2009 edition of the Basingstoke Canal News, the opening paragraph of the editorial bemoaned the state of the canal at Deepcut

“…. the County Councils not wanting to spend a penny on it before they have to. It is also clear, though, that even without any boating, there are many urgent issues that need to be dealt with for the sake of the general public. The 4 year towpath closure above Lock 28 is causing increasing public anger, coupled with incredulity at the time taken to sort out what is not really a terribly complicated problem.”

I took note of this.  At a meeting of Surrey’s Local Access Forum this week I raised the subject of the towpath closure. The pleasing reply from Surrey County Council is that they will begin work to repair the landslip this year.
