What’s this idiotic piece in this morning’s Daily Telegraph about the Tories planning to introduce car parking charges to out-of-town supermarket car parks.
The Telegraph says it comes from the Conservatives ‘quality of life’ policy review, led by Zac Goldsmith and John Gummer.
This is a vote loser – big time. There’s absolutely NO WAY that any voter will see any sound reason for such an idiotic policy. One of the dangers of David Cameron’s policy review method, though inclusive of all opinions, is politically naive, as many wiser people than me have pointed out to David Cameron.
I say again, there’s no way that this idiotic proposal should have seen the light of day. David you’ve got to get a grip on these policy reviews, it’s OK to trust Iain Duncan-Smith and John Redwood, but Zac Golsmith and ‘none-seldom-glummer’, never in a million years.
OK, so I know you sat on the idea today. But, that’s too late. Flaky policies like this must be be expunged from anything emanating from the Conservatives or its associated policy groups. I’m not sure DC’s denunciation is as strong as it should be. Here’s what DC said, and what the Telegraph reported when he answered questions from Telegraph readers during the day.
[David Cameron] said the party would look at the proposal for a charge for parking at supermarkets, but made clear he did not like it. “I understand as a parent of three children that when you are going to the shops, you are trying to manage everything, car parking charges may not be the most helpful way forward.”
Further distancing himself from some of the more controversial ideas, Mr Cameron said the quality of life policy review, drawn up a former Minister John Gummer and the environmental campaigner and Tory candidate, Zac Goldsmith, was a report “to the Conservative Party, it is not a report of the Conservative Party”.
There – I’ve got that of my chest. Now for a cup of tea, with a mite of brandy in it.
